Our earth has 4,000 million ha forest area which is equivalent to one-quarter of the total land. Japan, being covered 67% with forests, has a long history of its people living in a close relationship with forests. Thus the Japanese have established a unique living-style sometimes referred to culture of wood. In the late of 20th century, people in the world finally recognize the value of forests. And, 21st century will be an age of green environment. The people's feelings toward the forest will be increasing more than ever before.FFPRI was established in 1905 and has been the biggest and the government institute for forest researches. In 2001, FFPRI was reorganized as an incorporated administrative agency as a policy implementation body to the demand of administrative reform in Japan. |

In 2001, Science Council of Japan estimated the multiple functions of the forest in Japan responding to the government's request for advice. As the results it is worth at least more than 65 trillion Yen per year. The value of forests is really very huge far beyond the people's feeling. Our mission is to contribute to sustainable development of the world blessed with rich and diverse forests through researches on forests, forestry and forest products. FFPRI continues to promote innovative and comprehensive researches on forests. |
