Objectives

The majority of terrestrial biodiversity is maintained by forests. As the CBD target year approaches, the time has come that 191 CBD member parties have to evaluate their achievement of the goal that they agreed to in 1992.Since changes in biodiversity are not simple but complicated with different kinds of organisms, environments, and ecosystems, a scientific approach is essential to help in this evaluation. There are some suggested approaches; for instance, Loh et al (2005) developed the Living Planet Index to assess the reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss. However, not all regions or countries have worked with this or other approaches because of the difficulty in measuring biodiversity and the undervaluing of its important contribution to ecosystem goods and services.

Conservation of forest biodiversity is a primary approach toward our future to maintain natural systems and human well-being by continued and sustainable production of ecosystem services and goods.Forests and forest biodiversity are under tremendous threats by recent changes of the world (see e.g., Millennium Ecosystem Assessment 2005).Thus, particularly for the two of the goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity; the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of the components of biodiversity, scientific support is greatly needed.

FFPRI (Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute) with international collaborators (the organizing committee) will organize a symposium to promote the conservation of biodiversity by education to scientists, policy makers, and societies. As a result of this meeting, the committee will propose a scientific action plan and send an appropriate message to the societies. In particular, the symposium will try to reach a consensus on key ways to indicate change in biodiversity through various monitoring mechanisms, and provide a unified suggested post-2010 targets or perhaps set of targets to be discussed at the COP 10 meeting of the CBD.
