The Center for Advanced Materials is engaged in research to analyze and utilize cellulose nanofibers obtained by unraveling cellulose, the primary component of plants, into a nanometer scale, smaller than a millionth of a millimeter. Cellulose nanofibers can be prepared in an environmentally friendly manner when de-lignified cell walls are loosened by cellulase treatment and are then processed with general-purpose grinders such as bead mills.
