■Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and
Forest Degradation (REDD)
Tropical deforestation is responsible for approximately 20% of
total human-caused greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (IPCC 2007). REDD is a proposed scheme to financially compensate countries to reduce such emissions by better managing forest resources. It is discussed extensively how to set up and incorporate a scheme for REDD as a global warming mitigation option, into a post-2012 Kyoto-protocol framework.
However, REDD assumes that :
carbon emissions from deforestation and forest degradation
can be measured. In order for the REDD scheme to be realized, it is necessary to develop a monitoring methods for quantitative evaluation of carbon dynamics (emissions/uptakes) in Amazonian forests
