Re-evaluation of ecological restoration projects in Peninsula Malaysia

1. Partners

Faculty of Forestry and Environment, Universiti Putra Malaysia

2. Research Period

FY 2023-2025 Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI)

3. Lead Researcher

Reiji Yoneda (Shikoku Research Center)

4. Background

Since middle of 1990’s, many ecological restoration projects had been conducted in tropical region, and the technical methods had been reported. However, many scientists pointed out that almost of the evaluation had been conducted during the project periods. To evaluate the restoration methods, it is necessary to reconfirm the growth and mortality of planted trees, and vegetation condition at the project sites aged more than 20 years.

5. Research Goal

Objective of this research is to reevaluate and develop the restoration techniques and species selection at several sites where are more than 20 years after start of the projects in Peninsula Malaysia.

6. Research Strategy

In the project site, we will establish research plots and conduct tree census. We will check the site adaptability among planted species through check of mortality and growth of planted trees. Because it is important to confirm whether selected species were adequate for the plantation. Vegetation survey will be also conducted to check the natural regeneration and confirm the effects of installation of fruit trees to provide habitat for seed-dispersing wildlife.

7. Expected Outcomes

We will develop ecological restoration techniques in tropical region by re-evaluation of the species selection and techniques.
