Commentary |
A small evergreen shrub that grows in woodlands in the mountains to a height of 10-20 cm. the leaves have five serrations on the edges and are ringed at the top of the stem. The flowers are white and small, poking downward with a few in the leaf axils of the previous year's branches. The fruit is spherical with a drupe of 5-6 mm in diameter. It ripens red. It is used as a garden tree and New Year's decoration in Japan. |
