Commentary |
An annual plant that grows in slightly damp areas. The stems are reddish with swollen nodes. The inflorescence emerges from the leaf axils and bears several red-purple flowers. The flower has spherical sepals which swell up bag-like, and a part of the flower forms a curling spur. When the fruit is ripe, the slightest stimulus will cause it to burst and release its seeds. The Japanese name derives from the boat-shaped structure suspended at the end of a thin peduncle. |
