Japanese Flowering Cherries
The Cherry Tree Preservation Forest was set up in 1966 to preserve the genes of famous cherry trees from various parts of Japan. At present, it covers eight hectares, and contains cultivars stemming from the Edo period(1603-1868) and clones of cherry trees that are designated as protected species by the national government. About 1,300 cherry trees from all over Japan are planted in the Science Garden. Meanwhile, we are also collecting varieties that have not been introduced and developing our research on topics such as classification reviews, preservation methods, and physiological responses. The blooming period varies among the species, so you can enjoy the various trees in bloom one after another from late February through late April.
